How does the Rockwell hardness tester measure hardness?

The principle is simple: use a diamond cone or steel ball to first press the sample, then apply gravity to press deeper, and finally calculate the hardness by looking at the depth difference pressed in. The shallower the pressure, the harder the material.

There are many types of rulers: depending on the softness and hardness of the material, different indenters and forces are selected, and the common ones include HRA, HRB, and HRC.

HRC: The most commonly used method is to test hard materials such as quenched and tempered steel, using diamond cones and a force of 150kg.

HRB: Test annealed steel, soft steel, and copper alloys using a steel ball indenter with a force of 100kg.

HRA: Measure hard alloys and thin hard steel strips using a diamond cone, with a force of 60kg.

There are also special rulers available, such as HRE and HRM for measuring plastics, and surface Rockwell hardness (15N, 30N, etc.) for measuring thin parts. There are a total of 30 rulers to choose from. ‌‌

What are the common styles

Manual type: Like HR-150A, it relies on manual force, is cheap and durable, suitable for workshop sites.

Digital display type: With a screen to directly display numbers, it can automatically apply force and print data, like the HRS-150 series, making operation more worry free.

Full Rockwell Type: One machine can measure ordinary Rockwell, surface Rockwell, and plastic Rockwell, with full functionality and suitable for laboratories.

Portable: You can hold it in your hand and measure it. It is magnetically attached to the workpiece without the need to lift large items onto the stage, making it suitable for on-site large workpieces.

Key parameters: The initial test force is generally 98.07N, and the total test force has three levels: 60kg, 100kg, and 150kg. The test height is mostly around 170mm. ‌‌
